Description

Melonese is a small house dating from the 17th century, with an extension added in the 19th century. It features a timber frame with plastered walls and a roof made of handmade red clay tiles. The house has four bays arranged approximately east-west, with a southern aspect. There is an axial chimney stack located in the second bay from the east and an external chimney stack on the west gable end. To the east, there is a one-bay extension that includes an internal chimney stack, also from the 19th century. At the rear of the west end, there is a lean-to extension, roofed with handmade red clay tiles, and another lean-to extension at the rear of the east end, which is roofed with interlocking concrete tiles. The building is single storey with attics and features a plain door, four 19th or 20th century casement windows, and three additional casement windows in gabled dormers. The chimney stacks are cement rendered. Inside, there is a plain chamfered beam with lamb's tongue and notch stops in the ground floor room to the west of the axial stack. The original building has jowled posts, arched braces to the wallplate and tiebeam, and trenched outside studs. The tiebeam between the two eastern bays has been severed and a strongly framed round doorway from the 20th century has been added. There is also an original winding stair located to the north of the axial stack.
