Description

The John Barleycorn Public House is a house dating from the 15th century, which has been extended in the 19th and 20th centuries and is now used as a public house. It features a timber frame with roughcast rendering and a slate roof, adorned with ornamental bands of round-edged slates. The building consists of a north-south block that is single storey with attics, alongside a two-storey crosswing to the south that jetties to the east. There is an axial chimney stack located at the junction of the north-south block. A 19th-century extension to the west of the crosswing includes a chimney stack at the junction.

There are flat-roofed single-storey extensions to the northwest, north, and northeast, which were added in the 20th century. On the south elevation, there are two plain boarded doors set within 20th-century flat-roofed porches, an oriel window, and a casement window on the ground floor, along with three casement windows on the first floor, all dating from the 20th century. The east and west gables are covered with handmade red clay tiles. Inside the crosswing, some timber is exposed on the ground floor. A transverse beam is plain chamfered and is jointed to another beam with central tenons and housed soffits. Although the north-south wing was not examined, its overall design is consistent with that of a medieval hall, with some roof rebuilding occurring in the 19th century.
