Description
Tilegate Farmhouse is a farmhouse from the early 17th century, with extensions added in the 17th and 20th centuries. It is timber framed and plastered, with the frame exposed, and has a roof made of handmade red clay nib-tiles. The original structure consists of three bays aligned approximately north-south, with a short bay and a normal bay added to the north in the 17th century. There are two internal chimney stacks, with the northern stack built in 1982. An extension to the south was completed in 1926, reusing panelling, fireplaces, and other internal features from an early 19th-century house. A further extension to the west was added around 1980. To the north, there is a single-storey timber framed and thatched building from the 19th century, which was originally a dairy and later converted into an indoor swimming pool. The windows are 20th-century casements, and the south extension has a hipped roof. Some of the framing is exposed internally, featuring jowled posts and straight braces that are trenched inside the studs in the original building, along with primary straight bracing in the northern extension. The roof structure includes queen struts. Extensive repairs to the timber frame were carried out between 1982 and 1983.
