Description

Chalks Farmhouse is a farmhouse dating from the late 17th century, with extensions added in the 19th and 20th centuries. It is timber framed and plastered, with tiled roofs. The building consists of three bays aligned northwest to southeast, featuring an external chimney stack at each end and a central entrance with a staircase from the 17th century. There are two parallel ranges extending to the northeast, creating a T-plan, with an axial chimney stack in the east range from the 19th century. A single-storey lean-to extension and a small chimney stack are located in the east angle, dating from the 20th century. The farmhouse is two storeys high.

On the front (northeast) elevation, the ground floor has four 20th-century casement windows and a glazed door set in a tiled lean-to porch, also from the 20th century. The first floor features three 20th-century casement windows. The farm (southwest) elevation has two bow windows and a central glazed door with a tiled, gabled, rustic porch from around 1976 on the ground floor. The first floor has three late 19th-century sash windows. Inside, there are stop-chamfered ceiling beams, and some introduced timber in the southwest entrance hall. Both original ground floor hearths show repaired brickwork, and the northwest stack has a blocked arched aperture that was formerly used for a bread oven, which has since been demolished.
