Description
Miller’s Farmhouse is an early 17th-century timber-framed farmhouse situated in Aythorpe Rodings Green. The building has a partially plastered and partially weatherboarded facade, with a tiled roof. Originally a four-bay structure with a lobby entrance, an additional bay, approximately 2 metres long, was added to the east in the late 17th or 18th century. A rear extension and porch were added in the 20th century. The front facade has a three-window range; the lower windows are 20th-century replacements, while the upper windows are early 19th-century sash windows, shorter than the width of the bays. Internal features include stop-chamfered axial beams. A window with two original diamond mullions, previously unglazed, is located in the upper rear wall and is now incorporated within the 20th-century extension. The roof is a clasped purlin roof with half-hipped ends, featuring re-used smoke-blackened medieval rafters at the hip angles. From 1886 to around 1950, the lower west room was used as a grocer’s shop, as evidenced by county directories and an image held by the National Monuments Record.
