Description
Cawdles is a cottage from the 18th century that was extended in the 19th and 20th centuries. It has a timber frame with plastered walls, and some exposed framing is visible at the front. The roof is thatched. The building consists of three bays arranged approximately northeast to southwest, with a chimney stack located at the northeast end of the middle bay. There are lean-to extensions on the east and north sides, dating from the 19th and 20th centuries. A bay window added in the 20th century is found on the southwest side. The cottage is single storey with attics, featuring three 20th-century casement windows and a 20th-century porch on the northwest elevation, along with one casement window in an eyebrow dormer in the middle bay. The roof was originally half-hipped at both ends, but the thatch has been extended over the lean-to additions. Some framing is exposed inside, showing primary straight bracing. The partition between the middle and southwest bays on the ground floor has been removed, and re-used timber has been introduced to support the beam. An old photograph in the National Monuments Record shows that the cottage has remained unchanged since the 1950s.
