Description

Salkyns is a farmhouse dating from the late 16th century, with extensions added in the 19th and 20th centuries. It features a timber-framed structure that is plastered and has a tiled roof. The original building consists of four bays and has an axial chimney stack. The west extension, built in the 19th and 20th centuries, creates a T-plan, with a southern extension added in the 20th century. The farmhouse is two storeys high and has a five-window range of 20th-century sash windows, with the three northern ground-floor windows each having three lights. The roof is half-hipped at the north end and gabled at the south end. Inside, the timber frame is exposed, showcasing jowled storeyposts, primary straight bracing in the walls, and stop-chamfered ceiling beams. The original clasped purlin roof remains intact, half-hipped at both ends, although the south end is now enclosed within the 20th-century extension. One window in the upper part of the original south wall is notable for having all three diamond mullions intact, along with intermediate holes in the sill and lintel for stiffening bars for early leaded glazing. There is evidence of similar windows, but with missing mullions, in the lower south wall, lower north wall, and lower west wall of the north bay. Inside the north side of the original chimney, there is an original oak-framed cupboard, though the door is missing. The chimney also contains an iron trammel with three hooks suspended on a square iron bar set in the brickwork. Documentary evidence indicates that a former house existed on this site in a ruinous condition in 1580, suggesting that this farmhouse was built shortly thereafter.
