Description
The Forge House is a house dating from the late 16th century, with extensions added in the 19th and 20th centuries. It features a timber-framed structure, with the northwest wall covered in weatherboarding and the rest plastered. The upper slopes of the gambrel roof are thatched, while the lower slopes are tiled. The building consists of three bays and has an axial chimney stack located at the northeast end of the middle bay. There is a 19th-century bread oven, an external chimney, and a bakehouse at the northeast end, along with a 20th-century link unit at the southwest end that connects to a 20th-century extension made with re-used timber.
On the southeast elevation, the house is single-storey with attics and has a gambrel roof that is half-hipped at both ends, although the southwest end is obscured by the extension. The ground floor includes two 20th-century casement windows and one 17th-century wrought iron casement window. There is also a gabled dormer in the middle bay featuring a 17th-century wrought iron casement. Some of the framing is exposed internally, showcasing jowled storey posts and curved tension bracing that is trenched outside the studs. Originally, the roof had a single pitch, which was altered to a gambrel shape in the 18th century. The house has a total of seven wrought iron windows, some of which contain early leaded glass from the 17th and 18th centuries.
