THE FORGE HOUSE

House, late C16, extended in C19 and C20. Timber-framed, NW wall weatherboarded, remainder plastered, upper pitches of gambrel roof thatched, lower pitches tiled. 3 bays with axial chimney stack in NE end of middle bay, C19 bread oven, external chimney and bakehouse at NE end, C20 link unit at SW end connecting with C20 extension framed with re-used timber. SE elevation: single-storey with attics, gambrel roof half-hipped at both ends, but SW end masked by extension. Two C20 casements and one C17 wrought iron casement on ground floor, gabled dormer with C17 wrought iron casement on ground floor, gabled dormer with C17 wrought iron casement in middle bay. Some framing exposed internally. Jowled storey posts, curved tension bracing trenched outside studs. The roof was originally of single pitch, altered to gambrel in C18. Altogether there are 7 wrought iron windows, some with early leaded glass, C17 and C18.
