Description

The gate lodges and gates at the southeast entrance to Hatfield Park, known as the Pepper Pot, consist of a pair of lodges. The left lodge may date from the early 17th century, while the external details of the left lodge and the entire right lodge are from the early to mid-19th century. Both lodges are constructed of red brick with stone dressings. The left lodge is octagonal and single storey, featuring a dressed stone plinth and a band of pierced stonework in a quatrefoil pattern, along with a stone cornice and a pyramid-shaped plain tile roof. The right lodge is two storeys tall, also with a similar plinth and stone band, and is octagonal with a square addition on the right side. It has paired and single upper storey casements, a traceried brick parapet, and a chimney stack with arrises. The lodges are complemented by simple 19th-century cast iron gates with quatrefoil openwork and square stone piers.
