Description

Hamper Mill Cottage is a mid-18th century house, originally built as accommodation for mill workers and storage associated with Hamper Mill. A further attic was added in the 19th century, with alterations made in the 20th century. The house is constructed of red brick with burnt headers. Some parts are roughcast, and the attic is weatherboarded, with a machine tiled roof. It has two storeys and an attic, with a three-bay facade.

The ground floor has an entrance and two windows inserted within a large central round arch. To the left is a carriage bay with strap-hinged double doors. C20 cross casement windows are on the ground floor to the right, and also on the first floor. The eaves are formed of dentilled brick. A stack is located on the front pitch to the right of the centre. The attic features a central three-light and flanking two-light casement windows with leaded lights, beneath an eaves cornice.

The left return has 19th-century buttresses on the ground floor, along with scattered casement windows. A lunette is present in the attic, positioned under a bargeboarded gable. The right return has a lunette in the attic under a bargeboarded gable. To the rear, the eaves are dentilled, and there are C20 casements. Large stacks are present: one to the left of the centre, and another diagonally set at the right end.

Inside, the ground floor features chamfered binding beams; the building is included on the list for group value. The cottage adjoins The Old Cottage to the left.
