Description

No. 20 High Street is a millhouse with a bakehouse that has been converted into a house. It dates from the early 18th century, with later additions from the mid 18th century, mid 19th century, and 20th century. The building is constructed of red brick and features a slate roof with ashlar coped gables. It has a moulded wooden eaves cornice, a projecting gable stack to the right, and a single gable stack to the left.

The main house, built in the mid 18th century, is two storeys high with an attic and has a three-bay front that includes a plinth, a first-floor band, and a band above the first-floor windows. The central doorway is framed by an open mid 19th-century porch supported by plain square piers and pilasters, topped with an entablature. The inner door is panelled and has a plain and marginal overlight. The doorway is flanked by single glazing bar sashes, and there are three glazing bar sashes above. All windows feature flush wedge lintels and cambered heads.

There are two dormers with lead roofs, segmental heads, and single two-light casements. Attached to the right is a lower rendered early 18th-century wing that is a single storey with a garret, consisting of two bays, and has a brick coped gable and a gable stack. The west front includes a 20th-century glazing bar casement with a semi-circular head, a single glazing bar sash to the right, and another above. To the left, there is a lean-to with a Venetian window and decorative glazing bar sashes. To the right is another low wing that was originally the bakehouse, which has a 20th-century glazing bar casement.
