Description

The Clock House at Hamper Mill is a former wheel house for a paper mill, now incorporated into a dwelling. It dates from around 1800 and has been altered in the 20th century. The building is constructed of brick with stone dressings and features a hipped slate roof. It has five bays and two storeys. The central doorway is framed by a chamfered rusticated stone surround with a four-centred arch. There are 20-pane cast-iron fixed windows on either side and on the first floor, with the central window on the first floor being blind. The building has chamfered stone quoins and a timber clock tower in two stages, topped with an open bell turret and weathervane. At the right end, there is a section of the original mill building's wall. The rear has undergone 20th-century alterations. The Hamper Mill operated for the manufacture of paper from 1776 to 1908, and this structure was likely built after a fire in 1793.
