Description

Wheathampstead Place, also known as Place Farm, is a farmhouse that dates back to the late medieval period. Originally, it was a hall house with cross wings at both ends, but the northern wing has been demolished. The southern wing was raised in the 16th century, and an additional red brick wing was added to the rear in the early to mid-17th century. The building features a timber frame and has a plain tile roof, standing two storeys tall.

The gabled southern wing has close-studded timber framing on the ground floor and a similar style on the first floor on the northern side. The left side of the ground floor is made of 16th-century red brick. The upper floor incorporates reused timber framing. The northern elevation displays a large 17th-century external chimney stack, while the southern elevation has two similar stacks. The windows are primarily 19th and 20th-century glazing bar casements.

On the rear elevation, there are two gable ends, and a 17th-century cross-bar stair window features leaded casements. The entrance door has an ovolo-moulded oak frame. Inside, there is a mid to late 17th-century dogleg staircase with plain slate balusters. A ground floor door from the same period has moulded stiles and muntins. Additionally, there is a 16th-century stone fireplace in the hall.
