Description

The barn at Praewood Farm, likely built in the early 18th century, consists of two sections with later alterations. It features a timber frame with weatherboard cladding on a brick plinth and a plain tile roof, with Welsh slate used for the added outshuts. The barn has seven bays, with the four on the right being the oldest. There are two gabled midstrays; the left one has a later double door and weatherboard, while the right one does not have doors. An open-fronted lean-to is located between the midstrays, and there is a weatherboard outshut at the left end. A former stable range projects from the right end of the barn. At the rear, there is an opposing cart entry to bay three, flanked by loading hatches—one on the right is boarded across, while the left has a shutter.

Inside, the barn features large unjowelled wall-posts that are arch-braced to tie-beams, supporting tall queen struts. It has clasped purlins, old rafters, a later ridge-piece, and curved wind-braces. The wall frame includes a sole plate, mid-rail, and wall plate, with close-set studs, most of which are 19th-century replacements, and raking braces. The braces connecting the wall posts to the tie-beams are straighter in the slightly later left-hand section, which is now partitioned off.
