Description
St Germains is a house dating from around 1800, located on St Michael's Street. It is two storeys high and features five windows, along with a two-storey, one-window north extension that has a jettied front, indicating it is part of an earlier building to which the main house has been added. The façade is supported by four giant, flat pilasters—one at each end and one on either side of the central door—supporting a cornice band. Above this is a frieze, under the wide eaves soffit of a low-pitched, hipped slate roof. There is a band at the first floor level. The sash windows are set in flush, moulded frames, except for one modern casement on the ground floor. The entrance features a Doric doorcase with attached columns, a triglyph frieze, and a mutule cornice hood. The original six-panel door has a reeded cornice head, a patterned fanlight, and panelled reveals. The rear elevation also has two storeys and five windows, which are casements with transoms and gothic glazing in the heads, set under gothic arches. The ground floor features French windows that open to a paved loggia with a swept canopy supported by cast iron columns. Inside, there is a curved staircase with turned balusters and a cut string, dating from around 1800.
