Description

Rye End Cottages is a cottage range that was formerly a farmhouse with cross wings to the east and west. The central section likely dates from the 16th century, while the cross wings are probably from the 17th century. The building features painted brick and plaster with a plain tile roof. The center section was bricked forward in the 19th century. The eastern cross wing displays painted 17th-century brick and flint in a chequer pattern on the side and rear. There is a broad rebuilt stack at the center ridge and a large red brick external stack on the eastern wall. The structure is two storeys high, with the center being one storey. It has one 17th-century dormer on the front and two on the rear roof, with the western rear dormer featuring an original moulded oak frame and mullions. The windows are 19th-century glazing bar casements, and there is some parquet flooring on the rear eastern gable. Inside, there is a large open fireplace in the center with a moulded bressumer.
