Description
Magdalene College Cottage is a cottage dating from the late 17th century, with possible alterations from the 18th century. It has undergone further changes in the late 18th century and mid-20th century. The structure is timber framed with mid-20th century brick infill and part weatherboarding. The crosswing is rendered, while the left-hand gable end is made of early 19th century gault brick. The cottage features a straw thatch roof with a square ridge stack located at the junction of the main range and the crosswing, and there is a later hipped roof at the rear of the crosswing. The left-hand gable has a tumbled parapet with a small recessed panel, similar to that found at the Grange. The building is one storey with an attic and includes three gable dormers. There are two three-light hung sash windows on either side of the doorway. The crosswing also has one storey and an attic, featuring a flush frame horizontal sliding sash window in the attic gable end and a recessed window at ground level. Inside, the roof of the main range and the rear pitch of the crosswing have been rebuilt in the 20th century, while the remainder of the crosswing roof retains late 17th century carpentered timbers. The centre bay of the main range includes a sealed inglenook and above it is a moulded pad with dentil enrichment, dating to around 1670, which supports the main beam that is now boxed. The crosswing has a stop-chamfered main beam.
