Description

Carfax, located at 501 Broadway, is a house built in 1909 by Bennett and Bidwell. It features a unique 'butterfly' plan that includes a triangular entrance lobby leading into a high living hall, which connects to the drawing room through double doors. The front of the house is symmetrical, with gabled bays on either side of a gabled entrance bay that showcases exposed timber studwork. The building has one and a half storeys, with tiled roofs and brick stacks. The walls are roughcast, and it has mullioned casement windows with leaded lights. The drawing room includes a six-light transom and mullion bay window. The central entrance is marked by wood and half-glazed double doors.
