Description

Innisfree is a house located on Bury Lane in Datchworth, dating from the mid to late 16th century. It underwent alterations around 1700 and has been partially rebuilt and extended in the 20th century. The structure features a timber frame with some brick rebuilding and extension, topped by a steeply pitched tiled roof. Originally, it may have been an unheated crosswing of a larger house or a small unheated two-bay open hall, which was later modified to create a two-cell lobby entry.

The house is two storeys high with attics. On the ground floor, the exterior is faced with 20th-century red brick, and it includes three-light flush frame leaded casements. The central entrance features a plank door with shaped brackets supporting a small hood. The first floor has comb pargetted render and small three-light flush frame leaded casements that reach up to the eaves. A central axial ridge stack has been inserted, with a second stack located at the rear of the right bay. The left gable end has bargeboards and a two-light attic casement. To the rear left, there is a taller 20th-century brick wing with machine tiles and a shallower pitch. Additionally, there is a one-storey 20th-century gabled outshut on the right gable end.

Inside, the house features chamfered bearers and a clasped purlin roof with curved windbraces.
