Description
No. 68 Bury Lane is a house that was originally a church cottage, built around 1840 at the expense of Abel Smith of Woodhall Park, Watton-at-Stone. The building is made of yellow stock brick and features a steeply pitched roof that is decoratively tiled. It has a cottage orné style and is shaped like a T, with one storey and attics. The front has two windows, and the left bay projects forward with a gable front.
On the ground floor, there is a rectangular bay window with six light mullion and transom lattice casements that have chamfered surrounds, and this style of fenestration is consistent throughout the building. The attic has two lights, and the gable parapet has shaped kneelers with rendered coping. An entrance porch is located at the right inside angle of the projection, featuring a vertically panelled door with a coped flat head. To the right of the porch is another six light mullion and transom window, along with a tall two light dormer that has a steep gabled head and an ornamental bargeboard.
The right gable end has shaped kneelers leading to a coped parapet, and there is an extruded stack with two octagonal shafts that have moulded caps and bases. A similar cross axial stack is located at the centre. The roof displays alternate sawtooth and fishscale tiling, and the gabled bay projects slightly to the rear right. A slate-roofed lean-to has been added to the rear left. The interior has not been inspected, and the building is included for its group value.
