Description

The South Barn and stables at Staples Farmhouse are a group of agricultural buildings dating from the early 17th century. They are timber-framed and covered in dark weatherboarding, featuring steeply pitched roofs. The barn has an old red-tiled gabled front porch, while the rest of the roof is clad in corrugated iron, with a half-hip at the southern end.

At the north end of the barn, there is a short stable also roofed in corrugated iron, and a long stable that is thatched with a hipped north end. The barn itself is a tall six-bay structure facing east, with a gabled front porch that includes double doors and a small winnowing door in the rear wall of the same bay. The two southern bays were previously open at both the front and rear, serving as an implement shed, and are partitioned from the barn. The barn features jowled posts with straight braces supporting cambered tie-beams and inclined queen-posts to a clasped purlin roof, with some reused timbers present.

The one-bay lower stable at the north end faces east and has a single stable door. The long four-bay thatched stable has a clasped purlin roof, two old plank doors on the south side with iron strap hinges, a louvred ventilation band below the eaves, and a one-bay extension at the north end that includes its own door and window. This collection of buildings represents an impressive example of historic farm architecture.
