Description

Clun Grange is a house located on Melbourn High Street, dating from the late 16th century, with alterations around 1700 and further changes in the 18th and 19th centuries. It features a timber frame with plaster rendering and tiled roofs at various levels. The building has a red brick ridge stack with grouped shafts and a string course.

Originally, the house consisted of two bays from the late 16th century, with a lobby entry on the west side. The northern bay was likely rebuilt around 1700. The two bays are now two storeys high, while the southern bay was originally a single storey with a loft. There are two 19th-century casement windows and a central doorway. The northern bay has two storeys and an attic, featuring a cross-frame casement window from around 1700 on the first floor and a hung sash window on the ground floor. A small rear wing was added in the 18th or 19th century, constructed of brick and timber frame with a tiled roof, and it is also two storeys high.

Inside, there are red brick inglenook hearths, one of which is blocked. The late 16th-century section had a two-bay hall with an intermediate post, and the framing is substantial, with jowled main posts and a chamfered wall plate. There is a smaller hearth in the chamber above the hall and an original doorway leading to the room over the southern bay. The tie beam is lower, indicating that this end was originally a single storey with a loft above. The roof was likely raised in the 19th century when the rear addition was constructed. The bay from around 1700 features a typical staggered ten-on purlin roof.
