Description
This building on Melbourn High Street comprises two dwellings, with a shop occupying the left-hand end bay. It dates from the late 17th to early 18th century, with a rear extension added in the early 19th century. The front is timber-framed and rendered, with a tiled, half-hipped roof and a red brick ridge stack. The building originally had a three-bay and lobby entry plan. It is two storeys high, featuring three casement windows. A doorway, originally in its current location opposite the stack, is hooded with early 19th-century brackets; the door itself is a 20th-century replacement. A lean-to rear extension has a probable clay bat with a slate roof. Inside, the wall framing exhibits straight bracing, with regular and substantial timber scantling. The centre room features a red brick inglenook fireplace, alongside a Victorian fireplace to the right, flanked by early 19th-century cupboards. The left-hand end bay, likely originally used for storage, contains a cellar.
