Description

This is a row of cottages dating from the 18th or 19th century, located on the southeast side of High Street in Melbourn. The cottages have undergone restoration and enlargement in the mid-to-late 20th century, particularly at the rear of number 101. They are timber-framed and rendered, with a long-straw thatched roof and a shared stack of two diagonally set shafts. The cottages are one storey in height with an attic, featuring two dormers. They have four windows and three doorways, two of which are blocked. A small 19th-century shop window is located on the right-hand side. A late 20th-century wing has been added to the rear of number 101. The interior of number 101 has been remodelled and extensively rebuilt. The row represents an example of the tenements constructed in Melbourn towards the end of the 18th and early 19th centuries. Dr. D. Mills's work “Quality of Life in Melbourn Cambs. in the period 1800-50” provides further historical context.
