Description

MELBOURN HIGH STREET TL 3844 (North west side) 24/158 No. 78 (The Lodge) II

House. c.1830. Grey brick front wall and brick of more random colour to side and rear walls. Welsh slate roof, hipped, with boarded wood eaves cornice. Symmetrical internal stacks with entablature. Double pile plan. Two storeys. Symmetrical three bay facade of recessed hung sashes with margin lights. Doric portico of brick, plaster rendered with flat roof, leaded, to central doorway in round headed arch with panelled double doors and fanlight. Inside: Open string staircase with stick balusters and mahogany rail. Marble fireplace and moulded cornices. Elliptical and round headed arches between front and rear parts of the house at both ground and first floor. In 1842 the house was owned and occupied by John Hitch.
