Description

97 and 99 High Street and 1 Meeting Lane are a row of three houses that date back to the early 18th century. The roof was raised and a first floor was added in the early 19th century, along with a parallel range added at the rear during the same period. The houses are constructed with a timber frame that is roughcast rendered, and they feature a low-pitched slate roof that is hipped at the corner. There is a red brick chimney stack positioned at right angles to the ridge.

The original early 18th-century cottage follows a lobby entry plan and is likely three bays wide. It has been subdivided and extended in the early 19th century, with the return now facing Meeting Lane. The buildings are two storeys tall. Nos. 97 and 99 maintain their early 19th-century facade, although the original incised plaster has been replaced with roughcast. The first floor has five flush frame, sixteen-pane hung sash windows, while the ground floor has six similar windows and two original doorways. These doorways feature moulded architraves and panelled doors with narrow shaped hoods supported by cut brackets. The two windows on the right-hand side and part of No. 1 Meeting Lane are replacement hung sashes. Originally, there was a shop window, and one doorway has been blocked off, with a new rear doorway created in Meeting Lane around 1920, reusing the old doorcase. The early 19th-century parallel range at the rear is also timber framed and slated.

Inside, there is a red brick inglenook hearth and framing made of slender scantling, with some larger, reused timber. The original wall plate is still visible. The listing also includes No. 1 Meeting Lane.
