Description

Melbourn United Reformed Church, originally known as the Old Meeting House, is a Congregational meeting house built around 1716. It was enlarged at the south end in 1815 and extended to the rear around 1830. The building is constructed of brick with a rendered finish, featuring an 1815 front wall made of amber brickwork and some stone detailing. The hipped slate roof rises to a lantern, which has been replaced by a polygonal cupola topped with a shallow domed roof covered in copper.

The front elevation has two stages framed by pilasters with plain capitals and bases. The first stage includes a range of three recessed sixteen-pane hung sashes, while the ground stage features another sixteen-pane hung sash flanked by two pairs of six-panelled double doors, each surrounded by a moulded wood frame and pediment.

Inside, the later pulpit is flanked by giant engaged Doric columns. A gallery runs along three sides, supported by wooden Doric columns with an abacus that is enriched with carving. The balustrade features raised and fielded panelling, and at the south end, there is an 18th-century Chinese lacquered clock by Thomas Kefford of Royston. There is also a squire stall located between the two internal porches. The church contains wall monuments dedicated to Mrs. Sarah Nash, members of the Woodham family, and Rev. William Carver, all from the early 19th century.
