Description
This is a mid-to-late 17th century timber-framed cottage. It has a plaster-rendered exterior and a long-straw thatched roof, half-hipped at one end. An original red brick ridge stack is present, with some upper courses rebuilt in grey brick. The cottage originally comprised three bays with a lobby entry plan, and was later extended with a small kitchen wing in the late 20th century. There is a storey and attic, with three square-headed dormers added in the late 20th century, each containing a three-light casement window. The ground floor has three windows; the window in what was originally the parlour retains evidence of its original diamond mullion design, including pegs for the sill which has been lowered. A doorway is located opposite the stack.
Inside, a red brick inglenook hearth exists. The timber framing is well-crafted and of uniform size, heavier than timbers found in later 18th and 19th century cottages in the village. The framing style is similar to that of the Pink Geranium restaurant on Station Road. Original features include a newel staircase off the centre room and a doorway through a framed partition wall connecting the centre room or hall with the parlour. The end bay on the right-hand side was originally open to the roof and likely used for storage. The joists in the centre room have a cyma stop to the main beam and a single run-out stop at the other end. The roof structure is a clasped side purlin roof. In 1842, the cottage was owned by John Hitch and occupied by William Long.
