Description
Tollgate Cottage is a cottage and shop dating from the late 17th century and the 19th century. It features a timber frame with roughcast rendering, with one end weatherboarded and the other made of 19th-century clay bat, showcasing slender framing at the upper gable end. The roof is covered with long straw thatch and has an original red brick axial ridge stack. The building has a lobby entry and a three-bay plan, with the left-hand bay converted into a shop. It is one storey with an attic, featuring one dormer, one fixed light small pane window from the 19th century, and one 19th-century casement window. The shop window likely dates from the 19th century and includes glazing bars. There is a boarded door leading to the lobby entry. Inside, there is a blocked inglenook hearth and a later hearth that probably dates from when the cottage was subdivided. A blocked window opening is present in the clay bat wall, and heavy framing with downward bracing is exposed in the rear wall. A 19th-century staircase is located in the off-centre room.
