Description
Gaylor's Barn, located 40 meters south of Old Gaylors in Westmill village, is an early 18th-century barn with a roof dating from the early 19th century. It features a timber frame that is weatherboarded and sits on a low red brick sill, topped with a low-pitched slate roof. This barn is notable for its unusually wide span of approximately 9 meters and consists of 7 bays without aisles. It has double doorways located in the 3rd and 6th bays from the west and faces north into the farmyard. The structure includes 5 reused jowled posts, mid-height rails that are tennoned in line, and straight tension bracing. The deep curved braces support the tie beams. The early 19th-century roof structure features a single purlin on each slope, supported by short inclined queen-struts and further braced by straight braces from the tie-beam in the same plane as the struts. There is also a small curved collar between the principal rafters.
