Description
The village pump and canopy in Westmill, dating from around 1900 and restored in 1975, features a cylindrical and domed oak pump mechanism. It has a fluted and spurred cast bronze spout enclosure topped with an acorn finial. The oak hexagonal canopy is supported by six posts and has a shingled roof in two stages, also adorned with a carved finial. The design reflects the Arts and Crafts Style, showcasing carved decoration on the tapering cylindrical casing, which includes a double chamfered base, vertical fluted and moulded sections, a moulded capital, and a domed top carved with overlapping pointed leaves. The capital is inscribed with the phrase, "TRAVERSE THE DESERT AND THEN YOU CAN TELL WHAT TREASURE EXISTS IN THE COOL DEEP WELL." The pentagonal oak posts feature curved braces to the wall plate and brackets supporting the boarded soffit. This pump and canopy serve as a central feature of the picturesque village green.
