Description
The Village Hall and Village Hall Cottage, located east of Vine House in Westmill, is a building that was originally a barn from the 17th century, altered around 1900 for the Greg family of Coles. The structure features a timber frame with roughcast finish, resting on a chamfered low red brick plinth. It has a steep old red tile roof, with the barn appearing half-hipped in historical photographs.
The building is oriented east-west and has a half-timbered gabled porch leading to the hall. The western part of the hall comprises two and a half bays and is single-storey, while the eastern section serves as a two-storey house. The roof structure includes queen-strut and side-purlin elements, along with jowled posts and curved braces supporting the tie beams.
A prominent feature is the tall six-light mullioned and transomed leaded window in the west gable, which has a half-timbered apex and a simple moulded bargeboard. The large porch, with low side-eaves, also displays a moulded bargeboard and features a heavy battened oak door set in a reused 16th-century ovolo moulded frame, although the head has been renewed.
On the roof ridge, there is a tall slender arcaded louvre topped with a conical element and a vane. The house section includes a canted bay window with a cornice, a flat roof with leaded casements, a flat-topped dormer with a cornice, and a three-light casement window. To the right, there is a battened door within a simple surround, topped with a flat hood on brackets. Inside the hall, there is a barrel vaulted plaster ceiling above the tie beams, with moulded battens and heavy moulding along the wallplate. A narrow full-height panel of Delft tiles featuring blue figures on a white background is located on the north wall.
