Description

This is a barn located 40 metres north of Thundridgehill house, dating from the late 17th century. It has a timber frame that is weatherboarded, resting on red brick sill walls, and features steep old red tiled roofs. The barn consists of ten bays and faces south, with a central framed division wall. Each half of the barn has a projecting gabled porch in the middle bay. There is a low weatherboarded lean-to pantiled extension between the porches, as well as a similar tiled extension to the left of the left-hand porch. The porches have double doors with pigeon holes above leading to a small loft in the gable over the right-hand porch doors. Each porch bay also has a small square winnowing door in the upper part of the rear wall. The roof is constructed with butt-purlins, angled struts, and collars for each truss, supported by unjowled posts and heavy square softwood tie-beams. This barn is an important landscape feature, visible in views along the river valley and from the Old Churchyard.
