Description
W H Shepherd, Butcher is a house that has also been partly converted into a shop. It dates from the 18th century or earlier and was altered and extended in the mid-19th century. The building features a timber frame that is roughcast over a stucco plinth, with the south side cased in red brick. The east end and northeast narrow wing are also made of red brick. The shopfront, which is stuccoed brick from the 19th century, has a steep old red tile roof, while the shopfront projection is slated.
The structure is a small T-shaped house that faces south, but the shopfront is oriented towards the road on the west. The one and a half storey short north range that faces the road has a gabled 2-light casement dormer at the eaves above the shopfront projection, which features a half-glazed door and large sash windows flanked by pilasters and trusses. The two-storey crosswing has its gable facing the road and includes a 19th-century bargeboard, a flush 2-light casement upper window, and a flush box sash lower window with 6/6 panes. There is a red brick central chimney in the crosswing, along with a wallhead chimney on the south side leading to a rear addition. The south wall has deep window recesses with two wooden casement windows on each floor. Overall, this is a picturesque and irregular small house.
