Description
TL 32 SE BRAUGHING CAMBRIDGE ROAD (A10) (west side)
5/10 Gates at W entrance to Hamels Park (East Herts Golf Club) and 2 lodges 11.1.71 (Hamels Lodge, and Hamel's Keep) (formerly listed as pair of lodges (at entrance to Hamels Park))
GV II
Gates and 2 flanking lodges, now private houses. 1781-3 by John Soane for Hon Philip Yorke. Stuccoed brick with hipped slate roofs. Wrought iron gates. Double gates hung on stuccoed square piers, flanked by foot gates hung on half piers attached to the corners of the flanking lodges. Each lodge is designed as a square with a tall round-headed recess on the front, rear and side facing the drive. A narrower 2-storeys outer side section on each may be a C19 extension and the central chimney with 3 square linked shafts is probably of the same period (as it would have been external to the square plan). Symmetrical single- storey stucco extensions to right and left. Each square lodge has a painted plinth, impost band, recessed sash window in each face with 6/6 panes, and a dentilled eaves course. The gate piers have a necking and projecting cap.
