Description
The gates at the west entrance to Hamels Park, which is now the East Hertfordshire Golf Club, along with two lodges known as Hamels Lodge and Hamels Keep, were built between 1781 and 1783 by the architect John Soane for the Honorable Philip Yorke. The structures are made of stuccoed brick and feature hipped slate roofs. The wrought iron gates are set between stuccoed square piers, with foot gates on half piers attached to the corners of the lodges. Each lodge is square in shape, with tall round-headed recesses on the front, rear, and side facing the drive. There is a narrower two-storey outer section on each lodge that may have been added in the 19th century, along with a central chimney featuring three linked square shafts, likely from the same period as the extensions. The lodges also have symmetrical single-storey stucco extensions on either side. Each lodge includes a painted plinth, an impost band, recessed sash windows with six-over-six panes on each face, and a dentilled eaves course. The gate piers are topped with necking and a projecting cap.
