Description
Chedgrave Gate to Langley Park is a pair of entrance lodges and gates built around 1784 by Sir John Soane, which were restored in 1980. The lodges are made of gault brick with limestone dressings and Coade stone decoration, featuring roofs that are concealed by an eaves parapet. The design is symmetrical, with one-storey lodges flanking a central arched gateway.
On the south side, each lodge has a central recessed sash window with glazing bars, topped by a semicircular arched head. Below the cill level, there is a blind balustrade with seven bays. The lodges also have a moulded stone plinth and parapet. Above the window openings, on the coping of the parapet, there is a figure of a greyhound rampant supporting a heraldic shield, with the motto "TOUJOURS FIDELE" at the base. The east and west walls feature blind semicircular headed recesses.
On the north side, there are two centrally placed half-glazed entrance doors with glazing bars and semicircular headed fanlights. The central semicircular arched gateway has a cornice of mutules and is surmounted by a shaped pediment. Two chimney finials are designed as pedestals with twisted fluting. Coade stone medallions are present in the arch spandrels. The gates consist of square uprights with gilded spearhead finials, a double lock rail, and intermediate uprights to form a dog guard, with the tops of the gates swept to reflect the line of the arch above. There is also an attached red brick boundary wall to the south-west, featuring saddleback coping.
