Description

A house and former shop, dating from the 16th century with 18th-century extensions and alterations. The north side of the building is red brick, concealing a timber frame, with the north gable rendered and whitewashed. A section of the south gable is exposed weatherboarding. The house is two storeys high with attics over the north range. It has pantile roofs at two levels, with a steep pitch over the north range. The main facade faces west, and the north range has three windows spaced unevenly. These are two-light casements with glazing bars and segmental heads, with wedge-shaped lintels above the ground floor openings. A doorway on the southern ground floor has a six-panelled door and a doorcase with Tuscan pilasters. Plain brick corner pilasters are also present. A ridge stack is located opposite the entrance, slightly north of the gable. A 19th-century single-story pantiled lean-to is attached to the north gable. Above the lean-to is a four-light first-floor window featuring ovolo-moulded mullions and transom. The exposed gable tie beam has a large chamfer and run-out stops. Traces of pargetting (decorative plasterwork) are visible on either side of this window. A two-light attic casement completes the north range. Later, a lower range extends south, featuring a well-preserved 18th-century shop front with two bow windows with glazing bars and a doorway in between. This section has one three-light casement and one sash window, both with glazing bars. The south gable is parapeted, with a rebuilt external chimney stack and a tumbled base.
