Description

No 8 High Street is a house that was once an inn, dating from the 16th century or earlier, with alterations made in the 18th century. The building features a timber frame that is plastered and lined to resemble ashlar, set on a stucco plinth. It has steep old red tile roofs. The house has a three-unit composite plan, with a lower two-storey service wing on the left, which includes a later single-storey hipped extension at the rear. The main block was originally two storeys with attics, featuring a gabled rear stair turret and a rear lateral chimney in the middle section, along with a later external gable chimney on the north side.

The symmetrical front of the main block has two storeys and two windows, with a modillioned boxed eaves cornice supported by three small shaped brackets, a projecting plinth, and a central door accessed by two steps. The service wing on the left is lower and projects, with a plinth and one window on each floor. The main range has flush box sash windows with moulded surrounds and 3/6 panes, although the window to the left of the door has been altered to a three-light casement. The service wing features 19th-century sashes with divided large panes.

Inside the main range, there are heavy chamfered axial beams with ogee stops, a wide brick fireplace with a four-centred arch, a smaller fireplace above it, and a winding stair in the turret. The service wing reveals close timbering, tension braces, and heavy jowled posts. A fine tall rear chimney has tumbled brick offsets. This building was formerly known as the Blue Anchor Inn.
