Description
This milestone, located in Hamels Park about 600 metres west of the lodges, is possibly from the late 17th century and is made of Portland stone. It stands approximately one and a half metres high and resembles a thick gravestone with a rounded top and chamfered edges. The east face is inscribed in large, well-cut letters with 'XXVIII/Miles From/Shore Ditch/Church/London', while the west face reads 'XXIII/Miles 3/4 from/Cambridge'. It is likely the oldest milestone in the county and may have been moved to its current location by William Freeman of Hamels around 1745 when the Wadesmill Turnpike Trust made improvements at the 28th milestone, for which he provided land.
