Description

Hamels Mansion is a country house, now used as offices and flats, built in the early 19th century, between 1820 and 1834. It was originally commissioned for Miss Catherine Mellish and incorporates elements of a 17th-century structure. The main staircase dates to the early 20th century, and the building was converted in the 1970s. Constructed of red brick, some of which is reused, with stucco dressings and slate roofs hidden behind parapets, the design is Gothic, representing an early example of accurate stylistic reconstruction based on engravings of a previous house. The southwest corner turret was possibly built upon existing foundations.

The house is two storeys and attics, with a moulded brick plinth, floor and eaves bands, and a parapet. Gable parapets are topped with finials. Windows are mullioned and transomed, with decorative labels above. Tall, moulded chimney shafts are also present. The south front is buttressed, featuring two straight-sided gables flanking a Dutch gable with a central two-storey canted bay window. A rectangular, battlemented oriel sits on the southeast corner. A tall, octagonal southwest turret has a pepper-pot cap and a vane. Smaller octagonal corner turrets are incorporated into a two-storey projecting porch on the west side, which has a pointed arched doorway and window above. A tall, projecting chimney to the right incorporates false medievalations and tall heraldic panels.

Inside, the house features elaborate moulded plaster ceilings and a fine 18th-century cut string staircase with twisted balusters. Several 18th-century marble fire surrounds are also present.
