Description

Rhodes' Birthplace Museum is an early 19th century pair of houses that have been combined into one building. It features painted stucco and a felt-covered slate roof, rising to three storeys. The façade is symmetrical with two three-window units, each having a slightly projecting middle bay. These bays contain panelled doors that are flanked by square pilasters and topped with an entablature. The first-floor windows have architrave surrounds and shallow pediments supported by consoles. Broad pilasters are present at both ends and in the center of the entire block, with a continuous architrave beneath the eaves. The building has old sash windows. It is notable as the birthplace of Cecil Rhodes, who was born here on 5 July 1853. At the rear, there are extensive modern additions for a museum and conference hall.
