Description
The West Barn and adjoining North Barn at Nether Hall, located 20 metres west of the house, are two barns dating from the 16th and 17th centuries. They are timber-framed and weatherboarded, resting on a base of flint and brick, with thatched roofs. The older and taller West Barn is situated on the west side of the yard, with its gable facing the road and an off-centre gabled tiled porch on its west side. The steep thatched roof was originally hipped, but the south end has been altered to a gable, with the hip rafters still visible inside and the collars being lap-jointed. The gable features two windows stacked above one another: a two-light window over a three-light window, each with four panes and radiused corners. There is a flint-walled lean-to attached at the southeast corner. The North Barn adjoins the northeast corner of the West Barn; it is a three-bay, lower weatherboarded structure with a rear outshot and a steep thatched gabled roof, facing south. It has central double doors. Together, these two historic timber-framed thatched barns contribute to a picturesque group with Nether Hall in this part of the Conservation Area.
