Description

A block of seven houses, dating from the 18th century, which was extended to the rear and refronted in the early 19th century. The houses have a timber-frame construction, with weatherboarding or plastering at the rear. The front and rear of numbers 1, 2, and 3 feature brickwork with colourwork detailing. The roofs are covered with old red tiles, with a front slope and a rear wing at numbers 4 and 5 having a shallower slate roof. Number 1 is entirely slate-covered. The building is two storeys high, with a regular arrangement of small houses facing west. It has an 18th-century hipped roof projection to the rear, centrally located and flanked by 19th-century storey rear extensions. Each house has a single window on each floor. The windows are recessed sash windows with segmental arches and 6/6 panes. The entrance door is to the right of the lower window in numbers 2 and 3, but to the left in the other houses. The steeply pitched, tiled gable roof runs continuously from number 2 to number 7, with three chimneys along its length. Each house is distinguished by its tiled timber porch and door. Number 2 features a turned baluster Gothick gabled porch with chip-carved decoration, while number 7 has a more conventional Gothic porch. The other porches each have applied carved console brackets. This is an attractive row of historic village houses which forms the centrepiece of this side of the High Street and is a key feature of the Conservation Area.
