Description
Chestnut Tree Cottage is an 18th-century house, altered in the early 19th century. It is located on the east side of Nether Street in Widford village. The house is constructed of red brick, which has been plastered to the front and colourwashed to the sides. It has a steep red tiled roof and a front porch, with a pantile rear lean-to. The house is tall, with two storeys and attics, and is three windows wide, facing west. It has a two-room, central lobby plan, with two external gable chimneys constructed of red brick. The nearly symmetrical front elevation features two gabled dormers with bargeboards and two-light Gothick casements. On the first floor, a two-light casement is set above the porch, flanked by three-light flush casements; a similar casement is to the right of the porch, with two-light French windows to the left. All windows have the same pointed Gothick head to each light. A square, projecting gabled porch has a high pointed arched opening and small pointed windows in each flank wall. A six-panel, half-glazed door is set within the porch, which is offset to the left of the first-floor window above. This is a historically picturesque Gothick house of great importance within the group and in this part of the Conservation Area.
