Description

This is a symmetrical block of four houses dating from the 18th century, with alterations and additions made later. The facades are to what were probably timber-framed buildings, with a long rendered rear range to number 97. Numbers 97 and 100 are three-story buildings; number 97 is of red brick and number 100 of painted brick. They have tiled roofs, with number 100 having a hipped dormer. Both buildings have a canted, four-light bay window on the first and second floors, featuring a dentil eaves cornice carried around the top. The windows are sash windows with glazing bars. A decorative frieze with a patera pattern is present on the first floor, carried around the bay window between the floors. Number 97 has a late 19th-century advanced shop front, while number 100 has a modern shop front. Numbers 98 and 99 have stucco and painted brick facades respectively, both with an eaves cornice and blocking course and slate roofs. These buildings are two stories high with an attic and three gabled dormers. They feature six windows in total, with sash windows containing glazing bars, keystones, and flush frames. Modern shop fronts and a carriageway arch to the rear, under the western side of number 98, have also been added. Nos 97 to 103 form a group.
