Description

This is an early 19th century building on the south side of High Street. It is a large block constructed of red brick, with a brick eaves cornice and a hipped slate roof. The building is arranged over four storeys and has six windows. The windows are sash windows with glazing bars. Number 40 has a small, altered 19th century shop front, featuring an entablature with a cornice and architrave over a modern shop bow window. Number 42 possesses a particularly fine mid-to-late 19th century advanced shop front, distinguished by iron cresting with a central decorative feature and corner finials. The shop front has an entablature with a cornice and architrave, a double shop front with elaborate spandrels, iron pillars between the window lights, and modern glazing. Number 42 is designated as Grade II* specifically for the quality of its shop front. Numbers 26 to 34 and 36 to 44 High Street form a group.
