Description
This is a 16th-century rectorial tithe barn located about 20 yards west of Number 6 on Parsonage Place. The barn features a timber frame set on a chamfered red brick sill and is covered in dark weatherboarding with a steeply pitched roof that has been slated. It consists of six tall bays and is accessed through the south gable. The structure includes jowled posts and unjowled posts at the mid-bay, with deep, slightly curved double braces connecting the posts to the tie-beam. Each slope has two clasped purlins, both supported by straight or slightly curved wind braces that form a narrow angle with the principal. A long lower collar with queen-struts below the purlin supports queen-struts to the upper collar. Strainer beams have been inserted between the upper purlins at mid-span. The wallplates feature edge-halved scarf joints, each secured with a long face-peg. This barn is unique in the area for its use of double braces to the tie-beam.
