Description

No. 31 Frogmore Street is a house that is now partly a shop. The east wing dates from the 17th century or earlier and has been truncated, while the western part is from the early 18th century, possibly enclosing an older structure. The building was altered in the mid-19th century for use as a shop. It is constructed of plum brick with some blue headers and red dressings, and the timber frame of the east wing is exposed on the east and north sides with red brick infill. The roofs are steep and covered with old red tiles, featuring a parapet at the south and west ends, and a rear catslide roof over an outshut.

The house is two stories tall and has an irregular three-cell internal chimney plan, facing south with a lower two-story east crosswing. The south front has two windows on each floor and a door in between. The windows are recessed 19th-century triple sashes with plastered reveals and segmental arches. The entrance features a four-panel flush beaded door with a rectangular fanlight above. To the left of the door is a small four-light pilastered shop window. There is also a door at the west end leading to the shop. A blocked two-light 18th-century mullion stair window is located to the right of the large central chimney. The gable of the crosswing has been faced with 20th-century brick.

Inside, the shop is located in the 18th-century panelled parlour, which includes ovolo and fillet panel moulding, dado, and cornice. The crosswing features a clasped purlin roof with two bays, which formerly projected further to the south.
