Description

No. 26 High Street is a house that has been converted into a shop. It dates from the 18th century, with an early 19th-century shopfront on the west side in Akeman Street and a 20th-century shopfront at the front. The building is constructed from plum brick, featuring some blue headers and red brick dressings, along with deep gauged flat arches. It has a moulded wooden eaves cornice beneath a steep old red tile roof, which is hipped at the front.

This tall, narrow building stands three storeys high with a cellar, and it faces north. There is a single-cell rear wall chimney at the front block, and a two-storey and attic rear wing that faces west, with a lean-to on the south end. Additionally, there is a two-storey 18th-century rear wing further east that faces south. The front of the building features a wide triple sash window on the second and first floors, while the ground floor has the 20th-century shopfront. The west flank wall has blind openings, and there is one window on the rear wing above an early 19th-century round-cornered oriel shop window with a fascia above that connects to a flush-beaded panelled door. The lean-to includes a six-panel flush entrance door with a broad stucco surround and hood. The building also has flush box sash windows with three-over-three panes and closer bricks next to the frame, consistent with the details of the front range. A flat-topped dormer is present on the roof slope.
