Description
The Market House is a market house that has been converted into offices. It was built in 1898 by William Huckvale, funded by public subscription on a site provided by Lord Rothschild after the previous Market House in front of the Church was demolished. The ground floor, which was originally open, was enclosed after 1910. The building features a timber frame with oak posts on moulded stone bases, a jettied half-timbered first floor with roughcast panels, and a steep red tile roof topped with a central cupola and finial. The ground floor has half-timbered infill and doors leading to High Street. The southern end of the building is a lower two-storey section with a red brick gable chimney. The entrance and stair are located on the west side of the High Street frontage, providing access to the Council Chamber on the first floor, which has a large rectangular six-light oriel window at that end, and a six-light large transomed leaded window below the gable in the middle of the east side. The Market House also includes No. 61 High Street.
